Palm trees like to be fertilized in spring and fall or when being planted during their growing season.

Palms need water, they are oasis trees, not desert trees. They need water. A simple rule for watering is this: if the grass needs watering, so does the palm tree. This will hold true for the first few years until the Palm is established in your yard.

Palm trees can develop nutrient deficiencies from a lack of nutrients in the soil.  By amending the soil with specific minerals and nutrients you can give your palm a great environment to grow.  The soil in your yard is probably fine for a palm with just some fertilizer at planting.

The issue of "what's in the dirt":  When building a new landscape it's very common to bring in soil.  This is fine except you don't know what's in it.  A lot of soil mixes have bark and wood fiber in them and this uses up nutrients when breaking down in the soil.  These are nutrients that the palms need and need to be replaced.
